
Reports indicate that 76 politically active groups have applied to register as new political parties in Sri Lanka.
The Election Commission (EC) is currently conducting interviews for the registration of new parties, a process held annually.
According to sources, the Western Province submitted the highest number of applications, while the North Eastern Province had the fewest.
As of Oct. 16, Sri Lanka has a total of 83 registered political parties, according to the EC website.

Meanwhile, Sumith Chaminda – Lecturer of the Department of Political Science at the University of Colombo, noted that the country’s political party system has undergone significant changes in recent years.
