Chaos erupted after officials of Sampath Bank had attempted to auction assets of a cinema and teledrama production company –  Chamathkar Holdings (Pvt) Ltd, reports say.

The company, which had produced the 2018 film – ‘The Frozen Fire’ (featuring the story of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna founder – Rohana Wijeweera) and many other teledramas, had faced this situation after being unable to repay a loan from the bank taken for its production work.

Accordingly, Chief Debt Recovery Officer of Sampath Bank – Mr. Ashoka Menikgoda had led the auction.

However, chaos had erupted in all 03 auctions held at 03 different locations.

The first auction, held at a land located in Raddoluwa, saw chaos after the auctioneer had arrived late.

The second auction venue was in Pannipitiya. Due to a chaotic situation, the auctioneers were unable to enter the land, forcing the auctioneers to conduct the auction from the main road outside the land.

The auctioneers also allege that banners related to the auction were not placed at these auction locations.

Later, a conflict had broken out between the auctioneers, bank officials and a group at Borella, where the third auction was held.

Meanwhile, a video made rounds on social media, depicting Mr. Menikgoda lying on the ground, urging fellow officers nearby to call 119. Speaking later to media, an injured Mr. Menikgoda had stated that he was assaulted during the auction.
