Imported vehicle prices drop up following Japan price cuts

Source

The prices of imported vehicles in Sri Lanka have fallen by up to Rs. 1.5 million, following a reduction in vehicle prices in Japan, according to Vehicle Importers Association of Lanka (VIAL) President Indika Sampath Merinchige.

Merinchige noted that unauthorized vehicle imports had led to a backlog of unregistered vehicles in the local market, impacting sales.

Central Bank data shows that USD 705 million was spent on importing personal vehicles between January and August 2025.

He highlighted specific price changes:

  • Honda Vezel Z Play 2025 SUV: Rs. 23.5 million (down from Rs. 25.5 million)
  • Toyota Yaris: Rs. 10.5 million (down from Rs. 11.5 million)
  • Suzuki Alto Hybrid: Rs. 7.3 million (down from Rs. 7.9 million)
  • Suzuki Wagon R: Rs. 7.3 million (down from Rs. 7.8 million)

Merinchige also pointed out that Toyota continues to lead Sri Lanka’s imported vehicle market, with the Raize and Yaris models topping sales charts. In the SUV category, the LC300 and Prado remain popular, while the Toyota double cab and Ford Raptor are among the most sought-after vehicles.

He added that Nissan has gained traction in the small vehicle segment, while Suzuki Wagon R sales have declined due to a lack of model updates. The Honda Vezel continues to hold the top spot among SUVs, with demand bolstered by ongoing restrictions on electric vehicle imports.
