A victorious leap in the struggle against Ranil
Ranil Wickremesinghe, the eighth president, has been made to withdraw the state of emergency in the face of massive opposition against it from the Sri Lankan diaspora and the masses across the country.
Ranil Wickramasinghe has stated that the state of emergency would be withdrawn by the end of this week. This was announced at a function of the Association of Scholars and Professionals held yesterday (16th) at the Cinnamon Lake Hotel in Colombo.
As soon as the emergency was imposed, many political parties, including the JVP, Dravida National Alliance, National People’s Power, trade unions, and civil organizations, strongly opposed it. However, 120 votes were received in favour of the emergency law during the debate in the parliament. However, during the appointment of the President, 134 votes were received in favour of Ranil Wickremesinghe. This number was reduced to 120 when the vote on emergency regulations was taken.
