Anura Dissanayake will be the candidate from the NPP for the presidential election to be held in Parliament, announced the NPP. It was stated Mr Dissanayake would contest in order to fulfil the hopes of the majority of the people, as a common agreement could not be reached despite discussions with all the parties representing the Parliament to form an all-party interim government.
NPP MP Vijitha Herath announced this at a press conference held today (16th). The press conference was also attended by Dr Harini Amarasuriya, Member of Parliament and Dr Nihal Abeysinghe, General Secretary of NPP.
MP Herath said, “The dictatorial President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was overthrown by the common struggle of the people of this country. It is not a resignation. It was an overthrow by popular struggle. The first victory expected by the people of the country has been completed. Now the responsibility of appointing a new government and a president has been assigned to the Parliament. The NPP made great efforts to reach a common agreement in the last few days. The people of the country, the civil organizations, the groups that participated in the struggle, and everyone called for the formation of an interim consensus government. There was a general demand to go to an interim government to carry out the necessary economic and political reforms. In that sense, we proposed to appoint the current speaker for the next term. We proposed forming an interim government after that with the consensus of all parties and appointing the Prime Minister with the consensus of all parties.
After that, we suggested that an election should be held and the opportunity should be given to creating a new stable political structure. The essence of the proposals of civil organizations, various mass organizations, and the parties that were actively involved in the struggle was to form an interim government with the agreement of all. The interim government should implement a common agreement programme. We have recently discussed with all the political parties representing the Parliament in good faith. But the other parties have not agreed to that proposal. By Friday evening, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna announced it would present Ranil Wickramasinghe, and Dallas Alahapperuma, Member of Parliament, has announced that he will also enter the presidential race. Meanwhile, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has also announced that he will contest. Thus, it is clear that the establishment of an all-party interim government will not happen in practice. This competition does not lead to agreement. But our efforts are not completely abandoned.
If an agreement cannot be reached, the intervention of the NPP is essential for the future hopes of the people of this country. In order to fulfil that desire, people of different nationalities with different political opinions inside and outside the Parliament, and millions of Sri Lankans living outside the country, are demanding a clear and stable political policy that can overcome the country’s crisis today. We give the message that we are ready to accept the leadership challenge related to the stability they are asking for and fulfil that process. The support of parliamentarians is essential for that. The leadership of the NPP is ready to accept the challenge the people are asking for. It is to fulfil those responsibilities by assuming the leadership of recovering the country from the huge precipice that it has fallen into. For this reason, we are presenting the leader of our party, Comrade Anura Dissanayake to contest the election of the President in the Parliament. From the moment we take over the leadership, we are ready to accept the responsibility of implementing a common programme through an interim government that everyone’s agreement will appoint. We request the parliamentarians of all parties to support us in the operation of a common agreement and a common programme. If the leader of the NPP, Comrade Anura Dissanayake, is supported to resolve the crisis in this country, we are prepared to recover the country based on a common programme with the cooperation of other political parties. There is still time to reach a common agreement.
We are ready to build the country under Comrade Anura Dissanayake on a common programme with an all-party cabinet of an all-party government. We are giving this message to everyone. It is the message we give to everyone at this juncture.
