Basic rights curtailed by extending State of Emergency – GL
Chairman of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna MP - Prof. GL Peiris claims the people’s basic rights will be curtailed by further extending the State of Emergency.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, MP Peiris said he was the first Chairman of the SLPP and was directly involved in all discussions leading up to the formation of the party.
The Parliamentarian claimed he is well aware that imposing a State of Emergency at this juncture is against the fundamentals of the SLPP.
MP Peiris said adequate provisions pertaining to protecting public lives and property are included in the law.
The SLPP Chairman claimed imposing a State of Emergency will pave the way to fulfil hidden agendas adding such actions are not in the best interests of the public.
He therefore said he voted against imposing the State of Emergency.
