Commemoration of November Heroes today

Today (13th) marks the 33rd anniversary of the assassination of JVP founder Rohana Wijeweera.
The celebration is scheduled to begin at 3.30 pm today at Viharamaha Devi Open Air Theatre in Colombo. Along with the commemoration, there will also be a concert of revolutionary songs.
The JVP, which was engaged in democratic politics, was banned and suppressed on the pretext of Black July 1983 by rulers including Ranil Wickramasinghe’s uncle JR Jayawardene, Sajith Premadasa’s father Ranasinghe Premadasa and Ranil Wickramasinghe who was the Minister of Youth Affairs at that time. While the ban was being implemented, the Indo-Lanka Agreement was signed in July 1987, and Indian troops were deployed to Sri Lanka. The JVP leaders were hunted down and killed as a prime target in suppressing the protests led by the people against the forced agreement and the Indian occupation.
