Customs bust gold worth Rs.55 mn at BIA
A Sri Lankan passenger who was illegally carrying a stock of jewelry worth Rs.55 million has been arrested by customs officers at the Katunayake airport today.
The 38-year-old male who is a resident of Malabe was returning from working in Paris, France after 10 years.
He arrived at the BIA on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-564 from Paris at 05.45 this morning.
The suspect was arrested by customs officials when he attempted to leave the airport through the “Green channel”, which does not require passengers to check belongings.
According to customs officials at the airport, the suspect had worn the necklace weighing 2.4 Kg while strategically concealing the gold jewelry in his luggage compartments.
