Dictatorial frenzy of passing the Terrorism Act should be defeated –Cardinal
At a time when everyone should come together and build the country, the government, instead of moving forward by protecting the independence of the judiciary and democracy, attempts to pass an oppressive act that can implement the Prevention of Terrorism Act in a more dangerous way emphasizes Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo issuing a special statement and emphasizing that the masses should strongly condemn the government’s move.
In his statement, he emphasizes, Our opinion on this is that at a time like this when everyone is trying to rebuild the country, at a time when we all have to work to protect the law-abiding existence of the country as well as the independence of the judiciary and pure democracy, the government is trying to deceive not only the citizens of Sri Lanka but also the entire international community by presenting an even more severe law of oppression of the people instead of the old Prevention of Terrorism Act of 1979, which was criticized by the citizens of Sri Lanka as well as the international community.
Therefore, we condemn this bill. It is an act that promotes oppressive slavery and a dictatorial frenzy in the country. If anyone votes in favour of this bill, it must be said that they do not love this country and its people. We believe that all the citizens who love our beloved motherland will agree to reject this bill, and we urge them to do the same.”
