Government employees’ salaries in jeopardy
A recent report released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka reveals that the real or tangible value of government employees’ salaries has collapsed by more than half.
The relevant facts are revealed in the monthly publication issued last August. In August last year, the nominal salary of government employees was 114.6 units, and the actual wage was recorded as 88.7 units.
However, when the nominal salary was 133.1 units, the actual salary had fallen more than a quarter from the nominal salary to 60.5 units this year. The real value of wages of monthly wage earners in other formal sectors and informal sectors has not collapsed as much as that of government employees.
