Health Minister urges SL specialist doctors to return home
Minister of Health and Mass Media – Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, has made a special request for Sri Lankan specialist doctors currently practicing abroad to return and rejoin the public service in the country.
He said this while addressing a meeting of Sri Lankan doctors in the UK, organized by the High Commission of Sri Lanka in London.
Dr. Jayatissa also said the country is currently facing a shortage of specialist doctors, and that the contributions of locally trained specialists are vital at this time.
He emphasized that training a specialist doctor takes many years, and therefore, those who were educated and trained in Sri Lanka have a responsibility to serve their motherland, especially amid the ongoing economic and social challenges.
The Minister added that Sri Lankan specialist doctors, who have gone abroad for various reasons, choose to return to Sri Lanka for employment, they will be offered comprehensive services and facilities. He added that these doctors will be reinstated to their original grades along with all service benefits, and that steps will be taken to ensure they receive all essential amenities.
The meeting with the medical professionals, which included specialist doctors and general practitioners residing in the UK, was organised by the Sri Lankan High Commission during the delegation’s visit to the UK at the invitation of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD).
The Sri Lankan delegation for the WFD-sponsored visit included Speaker Dr.Jagath Wickramaratne, Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara,Women and Child Affairs Minister Saroja Savithri Paulraj and Assistant Secretary General of Parliament Hansa Abeyratne.
