Heavy showers, strong winds forecast across multiple provinces
The Sri Lanka Navy marks its 75th anniversary today (Dec. 09).
Guided by the directives of Commander of the Navy – Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, a series of commemorative, social, and religious events across all naval units have been organized, reports say.
The Navy traces its origins to the ‘Ceylon Naval Volunteer Force’ (CNVF), established in 1937 under the Volunteer Naval Force Ordinance No. 01 of 1937, to safeguard the country’s ports and maritime security during the pre-World War II period.
Following the war, the CNVF evolved into a regular naval force, and on Dec. 09, 1950, the ‘Royal Ceylon Navy’ was officially formed under the Navy Act 34 of 1950.
In 1972, it was renamed the ‘Sri Lanka Navy’ with the introduction of the new constitution.
The anniversary celebrations honor the naval personnel who have sacrificed their lives in service to the nation, protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity, marking 75 years of dedication and service.
