High Court Judges Association also on the battlefield
Organizations and six individuals, including the High Court Judges’ Association, have submitted petitions to the Supreme Court demanding that the new Income Tax Amendment Bill proposed by the Government to Parliament be declared unconstitutional.
The primary basis for these petitions is the proposed tax amendment provision for payment of income tax if a person’s monthly income exceeds Rs. 100,000. Those earning more than Rs. 250,000 have been subject to income tax. However, Finance Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has proposed to reduce it to Rs. 100,000, and the related Income Tax Amendment Bill was included in the parliamentary agenda on the 21st.
The Association of High Court Judges, the Association of Sri Lanka Judicial Officers and four citizens have submitted petitions with the Attorney General as the respondent to declare that this is against the fundamental rights confirmed in the Constitution.
