Source
The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has commenced an investigation into the incident in which 28 people were injured, and one person lost his life when anti-riot police deployed by the government attacked the protest held by the NPP with water cannons and tear gas yesterday (26th). The Human Rights Commission has informed the Inspector General of Police to provide the report on the attack within 24 hours. HRC has also stated that further investigations will be conducted based on the facts of the IGP’s report. Commenting further, the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission states that its attention has been drawn to the fact that the attack was carried out when the march was taking place in the Union Place area of Slave Island police jurisdiction, an area to which a court order prohibiting the holding of protest marches had not been issued. Although a court order had been obtained preventing the movement from Ibbanwela junction towards Slave Island, the police used roadblocks to attack the protest march in an area the court had not prohibited. 0 Comments
