Human Rights Commission & emergency law imposed due to Ranil’s cowardice
Legal experts point out that Sri Lanka will have to face serious repercussions internationally due to the emergency law imposed by Ranil Wickramasinghe.
The former chairperson of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission, Professor Deepika Udugama, has pointed out that the emergency law, which has been enforced with unprecedented regulations, will be strongly discussed at the UN Human Rights Commission meeting next September.
The professor made this warning while joining the Sirisa ‘Pathikada’ programme today morning (3rd). Earlier, during the imposition of emergency law, there were restrictions on the rank of police officers who could detain a person, but this time, the power to detain citizens has been assigned to any rank of the security forces, the military and the police she pointed out.
Political parties and civil organizations emphasize that President Ranil Wickremesinghe, appointed by Parliament members who do not represent the people’s sovereign power, has imposed emergency law not for the safety of the people but for his own safety.
