Inflation takes another leap – inconsistency in numbers
The people are under immense pressure due to the huge increase in the prices of goods and services, and clear contradictions have been revealed in the official data released regarding inflation.
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka officially publishes inflation monthly. The National Consumer Price Index and the Colombo Consumer Price Index are used in this calculation. However, there is a situation where clear information is not being transmitted to the public due to clear differences between the two criteria.
According to the National Consumer Price Index data, inflation was 58.9% at the end of June and 45.3% in May.
However, in the data presented on the Colombo Consumer Price Index for July, inflation is stated as 60.8%. It is stated that it had reached 54.6% by the end of June. Thus, people cannot get clear information due to clear contradictions between the two price indexes.
