Police reveal more details on Ishara Sewwandi’s escape (Update)

The police today (Oct. 14) has revealed further details on the arrest of female fugitive ‘Ishara Sewwandi’, who is a major suspect behind the  murder of underworld leader Sanjeewa Kumara Samararatne alias ‘Ganemulla Sanjeewa’.

According to the police, a Tamil man who allegedly sheltered Sewwandi was also arrested during the operation which saw the arrest of several persons in Nepal including Sewwandi.

 Investigations revealed that the organized crime faction led by Kehelbaddara Padme was responsible for the murder. The alleged shooter, Samindu Dilshan Piyumanga, was apprehended by Special Task Force officers in Palaviya, Puttalam, on the day of the crime. CCTV footage from the court complex later showed that a woman assisted the shooter by providing the firearm, which led police to identify Ishara Sewwandi, a resident of Minuwangoda.

Following the murder, Sewwandi fled through India, reportedly assisted by JK Bai, spending around Rs. 6.5 million before traveling overland to Nepal, where she was arrested on October 13 while staying on the top floor of a multi-storey house in a mountainous region.

Further investigations revealed that Sewwandi had also arranged a passport for another woman to facilitate her escape to multiple countries. Police confirmed that efforts are ongoing to bring her and other fugitives back to Sri Lanka.

Ishara Sewwandi & 4 others to be extradited to SL tomorrow

The Police have announced that steps are being taken for the extradition of Ishara Sewwandi and 04 others arrested in Nepal.

They are to be brought back to Sri Lanka tomorrow (Oct. 15).

The arrests were made during a special joint operation conducted by Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the Western Province North Crimes Division, and Nepalese security forces.

‘Ishara Sewwandi’ arrested in Nepal

‘Ishara Sewwandi’, the female suspect wanted in connection with the murder of underworld figure Sanjeewa Kumara Samararatne, alias ‘Ganemulla Sanjeewa,’ has been arrested in Nepal, reports say.

Four others have also been arrested during a joint operation conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Nepal Police.
