The Department of Irrigation has reported a rise in water levels across several reservoirs and water bodies in Sri Lanka due to ongoing heavy rains.
Accordingly, districts including Galle, Matara, Kalutara, Colombo, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura received significant rainfall in recent days.
The Kelani, Attanagalu, Gin, and Bentara catchment areas recorded nearly 50 mm of rain, while the Kalu Ganga basin was most affected, causing rapid increases in water levels.
Elevated water levels have been noted in Ratnapura, Millakanda, and Ellagawa along the Kalu Ganga, though officials stated that current levels are not expected to reach flood stage.
However, the department warned that continued rainfall could trigger flooding and urged residents along the Kalu Ganga to remain vigilant.
Meanwhile, people living near the Kelani River and Attanagalu Oya were also advised to exercise caution, with updates on potential flood risks to be provided promptly.
