A 22-year-old Indian deck cadet, Karandeep Singh Rana, is suspected to have been lost overboard from a merchant vessel while it was transiting off the Sri Lankan coast, according to reports from his family and the shipping company.

The incident is believed to have occurred on the evening of September 20.

Karandeep, a senior deck cadet from Uttarakhand, India, was aboard the vessel ‘Front Princess’ on its journey from Iraq to China via Sri Lanka and Singapore.

His father, Narendra Rana, stated that the last contact with his son was on the morning of September 20. Later that day, the family was notified by the shipping company, Executive Ship Management Pvt Ltd, that Karandeep was missing.

A massive 96-hour search and rescue operation was immediately launched. The effort involved the ship’s crew, Sri Lankan defence helicopters, and other vessels. Despite these extensive efforts, the search for Karandeep was unsuccessful.

In an official statement, Executive Ship Management Pvt Ltd expressed “profound sadness” and confirmed the tragic loss. “Our hearts go out to Karandeep’s family and friends at this tragic hour, as well as his shipmates who worked hard searching for him,” the company said.

The shipping firm has announced that a full investigation will be conducted once the vessel arrives in China in the coming days, urging against speculation to prevent further distress to the grieving family.
