New Year message of the JVP
Let us make 2023 a year that renews Sri Lanka’s history!
2022 is over, and we are entering a new year. According to the calendar, it is clear that no matter how much you wish for the year 2023 as per the tradition, this year will not be auspicious just by waiting. Because the new year dawns burdened with many crises and challenges created in the past 75 years, especially those created last year. The minister’s warning that the electricity tariffs will be increased again at the beginning of January shows that the new year will not be auspicious.
Nevertheless, this new year brings not only crises and challenges but also a new opportunity for change for the people. The people who have understood the real causes of the crises they are suffering and the experiences they gained from the past years’ struggles, the uprisings and their success in ousting the rulers can achieve many victories.
We first wish all those people who understand the length and breadth of the crisis that we are all going through, recognize the creators of that crisis and know that they are unable to lift this country from this abyss anymore are rallying together with the determination to put an end to the 75-year wrong political journey and write history anew!
Seventy-five years of corrupt politics have dragged Sri Lanka into a cesspit. The economy of the country has been ruined. Trapping the country in a debt trap and making each citizen a debtor of 1.2 million rupees our country has been humiliated in front of the whole world. Society has been made insecure. The black economy is powerful enough to bring drugs into schools. After 1978, the thinking of ‘killing dogs and looking for money’ has brought a country, a society and a generation of children to a wild and cynical level.
The sordid thought ‘earning money even by killing dogs’ that surfaced in 1978 has reached a cynical level where the country, the society and the generation of children would be in a sorry state.
In general, the capitalist system in Sri Lanka, the neoliberal capitalist system is now dead. The old politics and its politicians are decaying and stinking. It is its stench that we feel on and off. No matter how much you put perfumes and powders on it, you can’t stop the stench that comes from it, which rots and oozes. It is why this corpse that stinks the country and pollutes the environment should be buried, and a chance should be given for a new birth.
The cheating, frauding and destructive path of 75 years of the leaders from the elite, wallawwas and those racketeers, fraudsters and thugs that swarm around them have brought the masses to a tragedy. It is moving daily towards a dark abyss. That drive must stop now. History must be changed and rewritten. It cannot wait any longer.
It is the ordinary people who should take the responsibility of rewriting the history of our country. All the people affected by the existing wrong social system should come together. They must take the lead. All the progressive forces like artists, professionals, businessmen, manufacturers, scholars and intellectuals who are looking for a new world, the oppressed women who have lost their human dignity, the youths who have lost their future, the farmers who have fallen into poverty, the oppressed working people whose life is a struggle, the fishermen should represent the mass flow of people.
Individual heroes do not make history; Kings or nobles, Not even magicians. It is determined people who change history. That is the truth. Now is the time for those people.
All of us must rewrite the history of this country without getting caught up in the slanders, insults and cunning tactics of all those who are afraid of losing power and have contributed to bringing destruction to the people.
All Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher, Malay, and everyone of all religions should unite, erase all wrong, retrogressive dividing lines and create new lines between progress and regress, between justice and injustice, between humanity and brutality. We should fight together. We all should build a new society with economic independence, human dignity and social justice.
We wish all the Sri Lankan people and people’s forces coming forward to rewrite history anew in 2023 a happy new year of fighting, winning, and bringing glorious victories to the country!
