Our country is disgraced internationally because of Ranil – Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith
His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith says that due to the actions of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sri Lanka is being discredited internationally, and international support for the country’s crises will be hindered.
The Cardinal said this while addressing a press conference held at the Archbishop’s official residence to comment on the action taken to evict the protesters from the premises of the Presidential Secretariat.
Commenting further on that matter, the Cardinal said, “By this attack, President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was elected to the presidency only by the majority of the members of parliament, and who until then had no support in the parliament, has completely violated the basic rights of expression and protest given to the people by the constitution. We declare that the President will be fully responsible for this heinous attack and if any heinous act occurs in the future due to this inhumane attack, even though the protesters had announced that they would leave the presidential office by this evening (22nd).
It is also reported that local and foreign journalists are among the people who were attacked. We emphasize that we condemn this violence committed against journalists with disgust. I would like to state here that the President is directly responsible for all the adverse effects on the international support needed to solve the economic crisis and the international scandal that may occur due to such repressive actions.
We call on the international community and the International Human Rights Council to conduct an independent and impartial investigation into this unconstitutional barbaric attack and force the law to be enforced against all those responsible for it.”
