Per capita debt exceeds one million rupees!

The per capita debt in Sri Lanka has exceeded one million and fifty thousand (1,052,089) rupees.

The per capita debt was Rs. 793,888 at the end of last year (2021).

This new per capita debt amount has been estimated based on the average annual population of the country which was 22.156 million in 2021 as per the data released by the Department of Census and Statistics.

According to the data of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the total amount of loans to be repaid by the Government by April 2022 is recorded as Rs. 23,310.1 billion (Rs. 23.31 trillion).

The domestic debt is recorded as Rs. 12 billion while foreign debt amount is Rs. 10,867 billion.

The total debt of the government which was recorded as Rs. 17,589.4 billion at the end of 2021 has increased by Rs. 5,720.7 billion or 32.52% within four months.

This figure which was reported as Rs. 17,589.4 billion at the end of 2021 gradually increased to Rs. 17,873 billion in January 2022 and Rs. 17,940.2 billion in February 2022, but it increased rapidly to Rs.21,696.6 billion at the end of March 2022.

With the Central Bank's decision to float the rupee, the increase in the rupee value of the loans obtained in foreign currency has been the main reason for the increase in total loans by a huge value of Rs. 3,756.4 billion in March.
