PM requests to approve oil payment ; Party leaders refuse
The party leader meeting held yesterday (11) had heated up after several leaders in the opposition had reportedly expressed refusal to a request by PM Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Party leaders including Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Leader - Rauff Hakeem and JVP leader - Anura Kumara Dissanayake had expressed refusal when Wickremesinghe had sought the approval of party leaders to make fuel purchases.
They had pointed out that it was a decision to be made by the Cabinet of Ministers and not the Party Leaders.
Speaking to the media afterwards, Hakeem said he will not accept Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister, adding that Wickremesinghe is attempting to pass the blame on to the Party Leaders by moving a proposal at the meeting to make fuel purchases in the absence of any valid document.
The PM had said sought a temporary approval by the party leaders in the absence of a complete Cabinet, as a fuel shipment is to reach Sri Lanka on July 15 with a sum of US$ 19 million to be paid.
