During the war, when there were emergency landings during essential air operations, the ordinary people supported the security forces with great enthusiasm without any distinction between Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims, but the ruler, appointed without a mandate, is destroying the peace and values of the country says received pointed out Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyiyakontha.
Air Vice Marshal Thuyiyakontha made these observations speaking at the conference held by ‘Adhitana’ (Determination), the Retired Armed Forces Collective, expressed these views at Polonnaruwa yesterday (September 30th).
He said, “During the war, Air Force operations were carried out from Higurakgoda camp located nearby. When we needed to provide our support to the Navy or the Army in emergencies, we took off from the Hingurakgoda base and reached the respective areas. We provided our support day and night whenever there were terrorist threats. Our crafts landed at Thopaweva school playground day and night. When a mosque was attacked in Erawur area, and hundreds were killed, the crafts landed on this school grounds carrying the wounded throughout the night. As soon as the craft stopped, the civilians in this province quickly reached the craft and willingly took the wounded to the hospitals before the troops, regardless of time or gender. When a priest was attacked in a Christian church in Wakarai area, I and the co-pilot were taking him. There was a severe attack. Our craft was damaged and landed suddenly at Welikanda Mahaweli Stadium. Even then, the people who surrounded the craft took care of us for two days regardless of race. There are people full of such values not only in this district but all over the country. We have also been given values and good discipline as soldiers. All of us are people who have reached a good professional level with good humanity and management and the ability to accept victory and defeat.
We all made a collective effort and retired to spend the rest of our lives as worthwhile people for the country. But the politics and politicians of this country have created a broken-down country with degraded values. They have made this a country full of murders, robberies and accidents. When they cannot fulfill their basic needs, people are forced to carry out various activities. Have actions of these politicians protect social values? In practice they destroy valuable values for the sake of power, wealth and acquisition. That is true regarding most politicians. What is the example they give this country when a group of people accused of murder, fraud, corruption and lacking social values go to the parliament?
A ruler who does not represent public opinion acts like a bully in the village by passing anti-people’s laws. This situation is so bad that even if a cricket match is lost, people suspect the result. It has happened since 2011. We have had enough experience of this ruling system. When the ruler is devoid of values, the society declines. When the rulers are devoid of values, good things cannot be expected from the ordinary people. We must change this ugly politics first. The National People’s Power is the only force that could and would do it. Let us all work together to bring victory to the NPP in any future election. Let us all work with that determination.”
