Meanwhile, Professor Miyuru Chandradasa of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Kelaniya, revealed that 24% of school students in the Gampaha District have been clinically diagnosed with depression.

A joint study was conducted by the University of Kelaniya and the Monash University involving 1,045 students in Gampaha District, which found that 60% of students experience symptoms of  mental stress without having any specific medical condition.

He described the situation as “alarming.”

Professor Chandradasa said the findings highlight a lack of resilience among most students, with parental neglect and failure to address children’s emotional needs identified as major contributing factors.

He further noted that unresolved childhood trauma, exposure to abuse, and the heavy academic pressure from frequent examinations – particularly term tests held every 03 months have heightened stress levels among students.
