Sri Lanka facing worst economic crisis in 70 years – Jaishankar
Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar expressed sadness over the current severe crisis faced by Sri Lanka.
He said this yesterday (19) at the all-party conference held by the parties representing the Parliament of India.
The Foreign Minister expressed confidence that a situation like the economic crisis in Sri Lanka will not arise in India.
Delivering the opening speech of the meeting, Jaishankar said that the situation in Sri Lanka is very serious and that this meeting was called to raise awareness about it, and that the situation in Sri Lanka is a serious situation never seen before. Sri Lanka is facing the worst economic crisis in 70 years and severe foreign exchange shortage has hampered the import of essential food items, fuel and medicine.
In addition to the economic crisis, there is also an uprising against the government in the country. It has also led to a political crisis. In this situation, the acting president Ranil Wickramasinghe has also declared a state of emergency in the country, the Indian foreign minister told the all-party conference.
