Sri Lanka likely to require ‘outside effort to lift it out’ of its economic crisis
Sri Lanka’s economic crisis will probably require a lot of “outside effort” to get out of the situation, according to RAND Corporation Senior Political Scientist Jonah Blank.
“India has already offered an extraordinary level of support; I suspect that India will make good on these pledges because Sri Lanka is in contest between India, its traditional patron and China,” he told Sky News Australia.
“Which has been pouring a huge amount of money in through the Rajapaksas to these big white elephant infrastructure deals that have left Sri Lanka deeply in debt.
“So, either India or China is likely to step up with a lot of the billions of dollars necessary – I suspect it will be India, but if China wishes to make a play, there actually could be a contest here.”
