Sumanthiran explains how Ranil has forgotten the past!
The promise made by the then Prime Minister and the current President Ranil Wickremesinghe in 2017 to abolish the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) in order to get the GSP+ concession to Sri Lanka has not yet been fulfilled, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Media Spokesman MP M.A. Sumanthiran said.
Therefore, the MP said that a state-wide petition campaign under the title "Sarva Jana Yukthi Sanvidhanaya" has been launched demanding the immediate repeal of the PTA.
A press conference was also held yesterday (25) at the Colombo Public Library with the participation of a number of civil society organizations to raise awareness about this petition campaign.
The MP said the petition movement commenced earlier this year by his alliance demanding the repeal of the PTA is being relaunched in this manner.
The MP also said that detention orders were recently issued under this draconian Act, which was brought in 1982 as a Temporary Measures Act, to detain three protestors and to send a threatening message against the participants of the "Aragalaya" and critics of the government.
He said that since the government has failed to come up with a new Act that is in line with international human rights standards and norms, the petition campaign would continue to urge the government to take immediate steps to abolish the PTA.
