These corrupt rulers have dragged people of this country away from their families into a strange begging situation – Retired Rear Admiral Fred Seneviratne

“These corrupt rulers have dragged the people of this country away from their families into a strange begging situation. My political studies started in this background. The rulers, who made stealing, cheating, deceiving the public, misusing public property their only political culture, brought this country to this place. Law and constitution are just a piece of paper for them. This country cannot be rebuilt without changing this political culture. That’s why we are among the many people who join the National People’s P:ower and work with them,” emphasized Retired Rear Admiral Fred Seneviratne of the Sri Lanka Navy. He emphasized this while addressing the District Conference of the Retired Armed Forces Collective currently being held in Kurunegala. He said, “Politically, my family members have a history in Kurunegala. My grandfather had a tailor shop in Kurunegala Parakumba Street in 1949. My grandfather was a left-wing politician. At that time, a meeting of the Communist Party was to be held. My grandfather, who sewed the flag for that meeting, was sentenced to death by the UNP, which was in power at that time. At that time, the powerful members of the United National Party in Kurunegala sent a man named Hinni Appu to drink and killed the grandfather. I have such a political background. As a retired Navy officer, I must explain why I joined the National People’s Power. I joined the Navy in 1985 and retired in 2020 as a Rear Admiral after 36 years of service. At that time, I was serving in the infantry of the Sri Lanka Navy and the newly established Marine Corps. A military officer is assigned to act loyally to the existing government. It is not that I did not see the things that existed then. So I stayed away from many things. Like all of you, I had an innocent hope of being at home with my two children helping my wife. But even before a year passed, my children could not be given proper education and nutrition. I could not care for my parents. As someone with a substantial pension and other small sources of income, if this is the case, what are the lives of those on low incomes like? These corrupt rulers have dragged the people of this country away from their families into a strange begging situation. My political studies started in this background. The rulers, who made stealing, cheating, deceiving the public, misusing public property their only political culture, brought this country to this place. Law and constitution are just a piece of paper for them. This country cannot be rebuilt without changing this political culture. That is why we are among many people who have joined the National People’s Power. Only the NPP can rebuild this country. The opportunity has come for our second mission. These corrupt rulers should be ousted and a government of the National People’s Power should be established. Some people question the fact that we are together like this. They say “Jeppo made two revolts. Aren’t you ashamed to join them? They destroyed property.” There are people who say such things. JVP rebelled according to the situation at that time,. We worked against it. In such a case, lives are destroyed and property is destroyed. The rulers who have ruled the country since then until now have committed crimes such as looting, misusing public property and bankrupted the country. Janatha Vimukti Peramuna understands the current situation and the aspirations of the people and we have given everyone confidence that the country can be built through a new culture. Therefore, we should act with them without fear. There are no corrupt people among us here. We all have the responsibility to use our abilities as jewellery and take our message to the common people.”
