UNICEF expressed regret over 'malnutrition' remarks – Keheliya
The UNICEF Organisation has expressed regret over the reports it earlier issued focusing on malnutrition of children in Sri Lanka, Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said today (21).
He said this in response to a question raised by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Rohini Kaviratne in Parliament.
"I summoned the UNICEF representatives to the ministry and asked them why they made such a statement. They expressed their regret over it. They have issued a 2016-report."
UNICEF recently said that Sri Lanka is at the 6th place in terms of child malnutrition, but the Ministry of Health rejected this statement.
However, Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa of the Medical and Civil Rights Professional Association of Doctors (MCRPA) also said a survey conducted in the Sooriyawewa Health Division of the Hambantota District has revealed that 80% of the children suffer from malnutrition.
