The Ministry of Environment has announced that the ‘Wana Surakuma’ Joint Operations Unit will be inaugurated today (Nov. 03), with the aim of conserving Sri Lanka’s natural forest resources.
The unit will be open round the clock via the 1995 hotline.
The unit will include representatives from the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the Department of Forest Conservation, the Police Special Task Force (STF), and the Tri-Forces.
According to the Ministry, the public will be able to report any activity that causes harm or poses a threat to forest ecosystems through the hotline.
The initiative aims to strengthen efforts to collect information on rising forest-related crimes, conduct joint operations to curb illegal activities, and ensure accurate, transparent communication with the public.
Meanwhile, the official inauguration is to take place under the patronage of Minister of Environment – Dr. Dammika Patabendi and Deputy Minister – Anton Jayakody.
