Youths of the country should join hands to build a people’s government – SYU

We can get out of the economic precipice that the country has been dragged into only by coming together as one Nation and acting with a vision, regardless of Tamil, Muslim, Sinhalese, or regional differences, emphasized a press conference held in Jaffna by the Socialist Youth Union (SYU).
SYU held the press conference yesterday (20th) at the Jaffna district office of the JVP.
National Organizer of SYU Eranga Gunasekara, Young Writer Sadish Selavaraj and Karunananda Ilan Kumaran Jaffna – Nallur Division Organizer participated in the press conference. Their comments are given below.
“Gotabaya Rajapakse acted as a racist, gained a large number of votes and came to power. The country’s economy collapsed rapidly due to implementing an economic policy that protected corrupt smugglers who had got fat with deals. The youth community and the entire public of this country realized very quickly that his propaganda deceived them. Accordingly, everyone gathered and worked to oust the fascist regime of Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The Rajapaksa clique got together and put Ranil Rajapaksa in power as their protector. He does not follow any action to build the country or listen to the people’s demands except to protect the Rajapaksa camp. One of the basic demands of the struggle was to punish the corrupt and the repossession of looted public property. However, the current Ranil-Rajapakse regime continues to boost the crooks and the corrupt. The SYU is working with great commitment to wipe out this corrupt gang of thieves and create a government that is amiable to the people.
According to the 2023 budget presented by Ranil Wickramasinghe, the total expected revenue of the government is Rs. 3,456 billion. But Rs. 4,218 billion will be spent only to pay loan instalments and interest. Expected borrowing in 2023 has exceeded Rs. 5000 billion. 53.53% of the government’s total expenditure is spent on loan premiums and interest payments. Ranil Wickramasinghe’s only way of obtaining government revenue is by increasing indirect taxes. He does not follow any measures to build a productive economy. Because of this, the country’s entire people, especially the youth community, are under severe economic and mental pressure.
People are afraid of the future. There is nothing to bring happiness to families. The SYU is working to end this situation as soon as possible. Today, the youth of the north and the youth of the whole country can only hope for the programme of the SYU to come out of this precipice the rulers have pushed us into. Education has undergone a major collapse and has become available only based on money. As a symbol of Sri Lankan education, Jaffna had a very advanced level of education even when compared with international levels. Today, it is completely collapsing, the culture of the youth has fallen to its lowest, and drugs are spreading rapidly.
Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi districts are number one and number two below the poverty line. Farmers do not have fertilizer and other inputs for their cultivation. While the fishermen cannot afford the fuel price, they have to face the invasion of Indian fishermen.
Our marine resources have been betrayed to foreign companies. Wind power plants have been sold to Adani, and the sea urchin project has been sold to China. The SYU calls upon the youth community of the whole country to join hands to build a people’s government by changing all these conditions.”
