Construction of Sri Lanka’s first public heated swimming pool commenced in Bandarawela on Tuesday (07), with the government saying the project will improve access to modern sports infrastructure for athletes from rural areas.

The foundation stone for the facility was laid at the Uva Provincial Sports Complex. The project is being implemented under the direct supervision of the Department of Sports Development at an estimated cost of Rs. 144.19 million.

Addressing the event, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Sunil Kumara Gamage said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to encouraging youth participation in sports and steering them away from crime.

“Instead of producing prisoners, we want to produce disciplined sportsmen and sportswomen who can contribute to the country,” the minister said.

He added that providing modern sports facilities for athletes from rural communities is one of the government’s priorities, enabling them to compete successfully at both national and international levels.

Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sugath Thilakaratne, Uva Province Governor Kapila Jayasekara, Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure Samantha Vidyarathna, Deputy Minister of Tourism Ruwan Ranasinghe, and several other government representatives attended the foundation stone-laying ceremony.
