Dengue Infections Climb Past 81,000 as High-Risk Areas Expand Across Sri Lanka
July 26, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka has recorded more than 81,500 dengue infections since the beginning of the year, highlighting the continued spread of the mosquito-borne disease across the island.
Latest figures released by the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) show that the cumulative number of confirmed cases has reached 81,511, while the death toll linked to dengue has risen to 61.
July has emerged as the most severe month of the year, with 26,136 cases reported so far. Health officials noted that nearly 47,700 infections have been detected during June and July combined, underlining the rapid increase in transmission during the current monsoon period.
The Western Province remains the worst-affected region, accounting for 43,132 reported cases. At district level, Gampaha has recorded the highest caseload with 17,280 infections, followed closely by Colombo, where 16,213 cases have been reported.
Authorities have also identified 175 locations across the country as high-risk dengue zones. Public health officials continue to urge residents to remove stagnant water, maintain clean surroundings and support vector-control measures as efforts intensify to curb the spread of the disease.
