National Integrity Week Begins with Nationwide Drive to Strengthen Ethical Governance

July 27, Colombo (LNW): A week-long national initiative aimed at promoting ethical governance, transparency and accountability throughout Sri Lanka’s public sector gets underway today (27), with National Integrity Week being observed until July 31 under the theme “A Culture of Integrity – A Clean Sri Lanka.”

According to a statement issued by the President’s Media Division (PMD), the programme has been introduced through a circular signed by Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake and will be jointly carried out by the Presidential Secretariat together with the Clean Sri Lanka Programme.

The official launch is scheduled for 9.00 a.m. today, when the National Integrity Pledge will be administered simultaneously at the Presidential Secretariat and government institutions across the country. The occasion will also mark the introduction of a new Code of Ethics intended to guide public officials in the discharge of their duties.

The initiative has been designed to improve the quality, efficiency and transparency of public services while fostering a system of governance founded on integrity, professionalism and accountability, with a strong emphasis on preventing corruption and strengthening public confidence in state institutions.

The PMD explained that the programme defines integrity as carrying out official responsibilities with self-discipline, self-regulation and self-monitoring, while consistently upholding honesty, transparency and the highest ethical standards in public administration.

Each day of National Integrity Week will focus on a specific aspect of integrity to encourage institutional and public engagement:

• July 27 – Promoting institutional integrity.
• July 28 – Promoting financial, digital, entrepreneurial and technological integrity.
• July 29 – Promoting spiritual, ethical, cultural and social integrity.
• July 30 – Promoting operational, infrastructure, service delivery and labour integrity.
• July 31 – Promoting environmental, resource management, rural and community empowerment integrity.

As part of the programme, Internal Affairs Units operating under the guidance of the Presidential Secretariat within government institutions will receive complaints from members of the public concerning corruption, misconduct and shortcomings in public administration.

The PMD said complaints may be submitted through multiple channels, including QR codes, email, postal mail, telephone services and web-based messaging platforms, making the reporting process more accessible to the public.

To ensure accountability, the Presidential Secretariat will oversee a dedicated digital monitoring system that will track how institutional heads respond to complaints and monitor the progress of action taken.

Although National Integrity Week will formally conclude on July 31, the broader initiative will continue across government and semi-government institutions until December 31, 2026. According to the PMD, the extended programme is intended to embed a lasting culture of integrity throughout the public service and encourage sustained improvements in ethical governance and administrative standards across the country.
