August 06, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lankan javelin star Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has achieved a landmark feat by becoming the world’s top-ranked men’s javelin thrower, reaching the number one position in the latest global rankings and writing a new chapter in the country’s athletics history.
The achievement follows a string of outstanding displays on the international stage, with Tharanga consistently delivering world-class performances that have propelled him ahead of some of the sport’s biggest names.
A major factor behind his rise was his sensational performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland, where he secured the gold medal with a superb throw of 89.75 metres. The winning effort further cemented his reputation as one of the sport’s leading competitors and proved decisive in boosting his world ranking.
The latest rankings award Tharanga a total of 1,354 points, lifting him to the summit of the men’s javelin standings.
Germany’s Julian Weber has slipped to second place with 1,348 points, while Grenada’s Anderson Peters continues to occupy third position in the world rankings.
Tharanga’s ascent to the top spot is widely regarded as one of the most significant accomplishments in the history of Sri Lankan athletics and reflects the country’s growing presence on the global track and field stage.
