August 11, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka have confirmed their place at the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup after finishing among the leading teams in the ICC’s ODI rankings used to determine automatic qualification.
The qualification system awards direct berths to the eight highest-ranked sides as of September 30, with co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe excluded from the rankings allocation as they are already assured of places in the tournament.
Afghanistan became the final side to secure an automatic berth after defeating Ireland in a closely fought encounter, bringing the list of direct qualifiers to a close.
Sri Lanka will be joined by Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, England, Bangladesh and Afghanistan in qualifying through the rankings. Hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe will also compete in the tournament without having to go through the qualification process.
The outcome is a setback for the West Indies, who have failed to secure one of the automatic positions. They will now have to negotiate the World Cup Qualifier to keep their hopes of reaching the tournament alive.
The 2027 edition of the 50-over World Cup will be staged jointly across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, bringing the global tournament back to the African continent.
