The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has strongly opposed the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, warning that plans to extend the retirement age of Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges could undermine the independence of the Judiciary.
The BASL has raised concerns over the proposed changes, stressing that any amendments affecting the tenure and retirement of judges should be carefully considered to safeguard judicial independence and public confidence in the justice system.
The association has called on the Government to reconsider the proposed amendment and engage in meaningful consultation with key stakeholders in the legal profession before proceeding further.
