Agriculture Ministry Draws Up El Niño Plan to Safeguard Sri Lanka’s Food Supply
August 16, Colombo (LNW): The Ministry of Agriculture has begun implementing measures aimed at protecting Sri Lanka’s food supply from potential disruptions associated with El Niño conditions.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture Namal Karunaratne said a dedicated cultivation programme had been prepared to help maintain adequate food production and reduce the risk of shortages should adverse weather conditions affect farming activities.
A major component of the strategy is the careful management of water resources, with officials placing greater emphasis on ensuring that available water is used efficiently throughout the cultivation cycle.
Karunaratne said farmers were also being encouraged to adopt practices that minimise unnecessary water consumption, particularly in areas where irrigation resources could come under pressure.
The Agriculture Ministry has launched awareness programmes to educate farming communities on efficient irrigation and responsible water use. Farmers are being advised to avoid wastage and make better use of available supplies while maintaining crop productivity.
Authorities expect the combination of advance cultivation planning and improved water management to strengthen the country’s preparedness for possible weather-related challenges and help maintain a stable food supply.
