Defence Statements Begin in Easter Sunday Terror Attacks Case

August 18, Colombo (LNW): The accused in the case arising from Sri Lanka’s Easter Sunday terror attacks have begun presenting their defence statements before a three-member Colombo High Court Bench.

Proceedings commenced today in a case involving more than 23,000 charges, including allegations of conspiracy. The trial is being heard by High Court Judges Nawaratne Marasinghe, Ramanathan Kannan and Sujeeva Nishshanka.

At today’s sitting, three of the accused — Seinul Abdeen Mohamed Jasmi, Mohamed Musthafa Mohamed Riswan and Meera Sahir Mohamed Nafli — made statements from the dock as part of the defence proceedings.

A total of 24 individuals have been named as accused in the case, all of whom are currently being held in remand custody.

The court is continuing to hear the defence evidence and statements as the lengthy proceedings move into the stage of establishing the accused persons’ responses to the charges brought against them.
