August 24, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka has recorded 94,037 dengue infections so far this year, with health authorities warning that the disease continues to pose a significant public health concern.
The country experienced its sharpest monthly increase in July, when 29,962 cases were reported. June also saw a substantial number of infections, with 21,533 cases, while a further 8,701 cases had been recorded during August so far.
The figures indicate a fluctuating but persistent spread throughout the year. January saw 7,866 cases, followed by 5,721 in February, 6,013 in March, 5,651 in April and 8,590 in May.
The Western Province remains the country’s main dengue hotspot, accounting for 49,771 infections, or 52.93 per cent of the national total. The Southern Province has recorded 13,763 cases, while 8,519 infections have been reported in the Central Province.
Gampaha currently has the highest district-level case count, with 20,034 infections. Colombo follows with 18,652 cases, of which 3,787 were recorded within the Colombo Municipal Council limits.
Other districts have also reported considerable numbers. Kandy has recorded 6,818 cases, followed by Kalutara with 6,093, Galle with 6,079, Ratnapura with 5,160, Matara with 5,003, Kegalle with 2,713, Kurunegala with 2,651 and Hambantota with 2,510.
Authorities have identified 76 Medical Officer of Health areas as being at high risk for dengue transmission, highlighting the need for continued vigilance, particularly in areas where mosquito populations can thrive.
Health officials have called on residents to take preventive measures by clearing stagnant water and removing containers or other locations that could serve as mosquito breeding grounds. People who develop a fever have also been advised to consult a qualified doctor without delay, particularly amid the continuing rise in dengue infections.
