August 24, Colombo (LNW): Dry weather associated with the El Niño climate phenomenon has affected communities in seven districts across Sri Lanka, according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).
The situation has so far impacted 81,865 people belonging to 25,628 families across 23 Divisional Secretariat areas, placing additional pressure on access to safe drinking water in several parts of the country.
In response, the DMC has begun supplying drinking water to communities in 20 of the affected Divisional Secretariat divisions. The emergency distribution programme is currently reaching 72,153 people from 23,048 families.
Monaragala has emerged as the worst-affected district in terms of water distribution, with supplies being delivered to 33,023 residents from 10,264 families across seven Divisional Secretariat divisions.
Batticaloa is another major area of concern, where 28,523 people from 9,547 families are receiving drinking water across eight Divisional Secretariat divisions.
In Ampara, water has been provided to 7,882 people from 2,537 affected families in two Divisional Secretariat divisions.
The latest figures underline the growing strain that prolonged dry conditions can place on rural communities, particularly in areas where households depend heavily on limited local water sources. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and provide essential water supplies to communities facing shortages.
