August 24, Colombo (LNW): Kandy came alive on Monday evening as the second Randoli Perahera of this year’s Kandy Esala Perahera made its way through the city, attracting thousands of devotees, residents and visitors eager to witness one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated religious and cultural spectacles.
The procession set off at approximately 7.00pm at an auspicious time, following the traditional route in an easterly direction. Streets along the route were packed with spectators as the pageant moved through the historic hill capital.
A key feature of the evening was the ceremonial casket containing the Sacred Tooth Relic, which was carried by the tusker Sinha Raja. The majestic elephant was accompanied by Miyan Raja and Pulathisi Raja, positioned on either side during the procession.
The pageant brought together many of the traditions that have made the Kandy Esala Perahera an important part of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage. Elaborately costumed dancers, traditional drummers, flag bearers and beautifully decorated elephants added colour and spectacle to the procession.
For many devotees, the Randoli Perahera is not simply a cultural event but an important religious observance connected with the veneration of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. The annual festivities also provide a major attraction for visitors travelling to Kandy from across Sri Lanka and overseas.
With further processions scheduled as part of the Esala Perahera celebrations, Kandy is expected to remain crowded in the coming days as pilgrims and tourists gather for the remaining nights of the historic pageant.
