September 03, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka and Bhutan are looking to deepen cooperation in legal education, with discussions focusing on academic exchanges, collaborative research and the sharing of professional expertise.
Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya held discussions on the subject during a visit to the Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law in Bhutan on 2 September, as part of her official visit to the country.
The visit offered an opportunity to gain an insight into the Bhutanese institution’s approach to legal education, justice innovation and the training of future legal professionals. The two sides also exchanged views on the distinct legal frameworks and judicial traditions of Sri Lanka and Bhutan.
Strengthening institutional links emerged as a key area of interest, with potential cooperation including exchanges involving students and academic staff, joint research initiatives and broader engagement in legal and judicial education.
The discussions also highlighted the value of sharing practical experience between the two countries. Such cooperation could support the further development of legal training and contribute to greater academic interaction between institutions in Sri Lanka and Bhutan.
The Prime Minister’s visit to the law school formed part of her official programme in Bhutan.
