The Government has approved plans to establish digital development units across government institutions to support the implementation of Sri Lanka’s National Digital Economy Strategy 2025–2030.
The decision follows Cabinet approval of the National Digital Economy Strategy on October 21, 2025. The proposed units will coordinate digital transformation initiatives and oversee the implementation of relevant programmes within individual government institutions.
Under the approved framework, each institution will appoint a Chief Digital Officer (CDO) to lead its digital transformation activities. The digital development units will be established based on a reference framework developed by GovTech Sri Lanka.
The initiative is aimed at accelerating the digital transformation of public services while strengthening coordination among government institutions involved in implementing the national digital economy strategy.
Relevant institutions will work closely with GovTech Sri Lanka to establish the units and put the necessary arrangements in place, under the direction of their respective Chief Digital Officers.
The Cabinet decision states that the required institutional mechanisms will be established to ensure the programme is implemented in accordance with the National Digital Economy Strategy 2025–2030.
