September 24, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka is preparing to pursue international assistance to strengthen its capacity to deal with possible drought conditions in the years ahead, Environment Minister Dr Dammika Patabendi has said.
According to the Minister, the issue was raised during a recent United Nations conference on drought and desertification held in Mongolia, where the challenges posed by prolonged dry periods and their impact on communities and infrastructure were discussed.
Sri Lanka is expected to seek financial and technical support through a dedicated fund that the United Nations is anticipated to establish as part of efforts to help countries affected by drought and land degradation.
Dr Patabendi said such assistance could play an important role in improving the country’s preparedness, particularly by supporting the development of infrastructure and other facilities required to manage the effects of prolonged water shortages.
The proposed support could also strengthen Sri Lanka’s ability to respond to future climate-related pressures, particularly in regions that are more vulnerable to extended dry spells.
The Minister indicated that the Government intends to explore available international mechanisms as part of a broader effort to improve national preparedness and ensure that adequate resources are available when drought conditions arise.
