Sri Lanka and China are exploring new avenues to strengthen their longstanding bilateral ties through expanded cooperation in Buddhist education, cinema, literature and cultural heritage preservation.
The proposals were discussed during a meeting yesterday between Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Wei Huaxiang and Minister of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi at the Ministry.
Building on the two countries’ centuries-old historical, religious and cultural connections, the discussions focused on initiatives to promote exchanges benefiting students, artists, academics and cultural institutions in both countries.
One of the key proposals was to introduce film exchange programmes, enabling audiences in Sri Lanka and China to experience each other’s cinematic works while fostering greater cultural understanding through the arts.
The two sides also discussed providing scholarships for Sri Lankan students to pursue Buddhist studies in China. The initiative is expected to create further academic opportunities for Sri Lankan scholars while strengthening educational and spiritual links between the countries.
In addition, the discussions covered the translation and exchange of literary works to improve access to the literary traditions of both nations and promote the sharing of knowledge across language barriers.
The proposed initiatives reflect efforts by Sri Lanka and China to build on their longstanding friendship by expanding cooperation in religious, educational and cultural fields.
