34 years since Sajith’s father allowed the killing of 774 policemen
Yesterday (June 11) marks 34 years since 774 police officers were killed after President Ranasinghe Premadasa ordered them to surrender to the LTTE.
The then President Ranasinghe Premadasa had ordered a large number of police officers working in the Northern Province to surrender their weapons to the LTTE organization. Accordingly, 774 people who surrendered were killed on June 11, 1990, and their bodies burned.
While the LTTE organization surrounded the police stations in Northern Province, the police officers at that time were ready to retaliate. However, State Security Minister Ranjan Wijeratne, on the instructions of President Ranasinghe Premadasa, prevented it. It was later revealed that at this time, the police were nervous about the government’s order, and some people retreated with weapons for their lives.
Please refer to the note regarding the tragedy published on the Ministry of Defense website.
