Ranil’s name at the top
It had been revealed that Ranil Wickramasinghe was among the ministers who were instrumental in thoroughly looting the District Development Council elections held during the tenure of the United National Party President JR Jayawardena.
The election was held in early June 1981. In Jaffna, four ministers of the government had been named in the Parliament for the terror that was launched to turn it into a massive vote robbery.
S. D. Bandaranaike, who was a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in Parliament at that time, revealed the relevant ministers on June 10, 1981, in Parliament. According to him, Ranil Wickramasinghe, Cyril Mathew, Gamini Dissanayake, and Festus Perera remained in Jaffna and had led a campaign of terror to steal votes.
It is further mentioned in the statement that 150 senior election officials who were on election duty in Jaffna were chased out, and election duties were handed over to thugs of the United National Party.
