Information has been revealed about a large-scale financial crime committed during the payment of foreign debt.

It has been revealed that in 2023, one dollar was bought at an exchange rate of Rs 524.6050 to pay the foreign debt taken by the Sri Lankan government. This has been revealed in the Auditor General’s observation report included in the 2023 Ministry of Finance annual report.

At that exchange rate, US$332,704 has been obtained. Accordingly, Sri Lanka has spent Rs 174,536,518 to get that amount of dollars. However, at the peak when the rupee was collapsing rapidly, one dollar was paid at Rs 363.17. At that rate, the cost to get $332,704 is Rs 120,828,111. Thus, it is confirmed that a financial crime has been committed by spending Rs 53.7 million (Rs 53,708,407.00) more to buy dollars for the purpose of paying the related foreign debt.
